Attorney Anderson Educates on Head Injuries at Hammond Kiwanis Club

Attorney J. Thomas Anderson is the youngest person to have ever be elected mayor in Hammond. Though he is no longer in politics, he is always up-to-date on what is happening in the community and pays close attention to the issues that affect average citizens, even when they involving something so seemingly non-legal as contact sports.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and Contact Sports

The world of college and professional sports has seen its fair share of conflict over the past few years regarding Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a degenerative disease that attacks the brains of people who have experienced repeated concussions and blows to the head.

This disease is particularly common among football players. A study from 2017 revealed that roughly 85% of them develop CTE. Due to the nature of the game, football players experience coup-countrecoup, which causes the brain to collide with the inside of the skull and begin to swell, damaging the brain.

At a recent meeting at the Hammond Kiwanis Club, Attorney Anderson spoke on the nature of brain injuries in contact sports. “If it disrupts the normal function of the brain, it’s a brain injury,” he said.

“A blow to the head is what a boxer gets or what a soccer player gets every time they hit the ball with their head. Soccer coaches now put a limitation on how many headers players can take in practice each day because of the repetitiveness. It’s like watching boxers take jabs from Muhammad Ali.”

According to a local newspaper in Hammond, Anderson discussed the Glasgow Coma Scale, discussed symptoms of CTE and other brain injuries, and fielded questions about the current state of football and what sport leaders are doing to protect their players.
