Louisiana Law Enforcement Revamps 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' Campaign

July 2018 Safety Campaign Aims to Reduce Drunk Driving & Fatalities

Holidays, vacation, and free time typically make for more dangerous travel, especially when it comes to drinking and driving. This summer, Louisiana police are out to minimize intoxicated driving statewide by launching a roadway safety campaign this summer and launching new efforts to crack down on drunk drivers.

On Friday, July 6, 2018, Louisiana law enforcement revamped a former safety campaign called Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. This is more than just a reminder to avoid drunk drivers; it means there will be a more concentrated police focus on catching impaired motorists as a means of preventing costly crashes and unnecessary deaths. The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission provides funding and grant money for local police in order to help pay overtime patrol wages and ensure highway checkpoints are always manned.

Historically, alcohol has been a major contributor to roadway deaths in the state of Louisiana, at times factoring in to more than 40% of car accident fatalities. Despite tough penalties for impaired drivers and repeat offenders, many drivers continue to put themselves and others at risk by driving while intoxicated. Members of Louisiana law enforcement are hopeful that an increased police presence will make people think twice about getting out on the road while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
