Takata Fined $70 Million During Airbag Recall

Defective airbags produced by the Takata Corporation of Japan have been directly linked to at least eight deaths and upwards of 100 debilitating injuries worldwide. For their slow response and mishandling of the recall that would follow, United States auto safety regulators – most notably the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – have fined the company $70 million upfront.

Takata has been given a five-year window to recall their airbags entirely, unless they are able to prove beyond a doubt that they are in fact safe for everyday use. Failing to comply with this timeline will slam them with another $130 million in fines. If imposed, the $200 million fine would be the largest ever created by the NHTSA.

Interestingly enough, the recall has only focused on driver and passenger side airbags. The NHTSA is still looking into whether or not Takata side airbags require investigation and recall. If so, additional fines may be on the way.

Getting Your Fair Compensation

Even as Takata scrambles to clean up their disaster, there are still those out there who have not had their voices be heard after being injured due to their defective airbags. If you or someone you know has suffered due to a Takata product, there is still time for you to file a personal injury lawsuit against the Japanese manufacturing giant. It might even be possible for you to create or opt into a mass tort or class action.
